Drunk Motorcyclist Strikes Family in Minas Gerais
Based on reports from local authorities, a 38-year-old motorcyclist was arrested following a severe collision that struck a 28-year-old woman and her two young children on Sunday afternoon, August 16, 2026, in Inhapim, located in the Rio Doce Valley region of Brazil.
According to the Military Police, the victims were walking near the curb along Avenida Presidente Tancredo Neves in the Santo Antonio neighborhood when the motorcycle suddenly veered off course and impacted the family at approximately 1 o'clock in the afternoon.
The violent impact threw both the mother and her children onto the pavement, prompting immediate emergency response from the Mobile Emergency Medical Service teams who provided critical first aid directly at the scene of the crash.
Citing reports from law enforcement agencies, the mother was rushed to Hospital Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora for treatment, while her infant and one-year-old child were transferred to Hospital Irmã Denise for further medical evaluation.
Breathalyzer Test Confirms Intoxication and Traffic Crime
According to the Military Police, the suspect displayed clear signs of severe intoxication as officers arrived, sitting on a nearby sidewalk and struggling to maintain basic physical balance or coherent speech.
Officers noted that the operator exhibited significant psychomotor alterations and severe swaying, requiring direct physical assistance from law enforcement personnel just to walk safely toward the official police vehicle.
The suspect agreed to undergo a breathalyzer test administered by the authorities, which subsequently revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.89 milligrams of alcohol per liter of expelled air, far exceeding legal limits.
Police confirmed that this high level of alcohol concentration constitutes a formal traffic crime under local legislation, leading to his formal arrest following medical clearance at the Inhapim Municipal Hospital.
Passenger Flees Scene as Additional Violations Emerge
According to ongoing investigations by the Civil Police, an unidentified passenger riding on the back of the motorcycle at the moment of the crash fled the area immediately before officers could secure the location.
Law enforcement teams confirmed that the fleeing passenger remained at large by the time officers concluded the initial incident report at the station in the nearby municipality of Caratinga.
In addition to the serious drunk driving charges, military officers discovered during routine vehicle inspections that the motorcycle's official registration and licensing documentation were completely expired.
