Survivors Recall Terror as Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Strikes Flores Island
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck just north of Indonesia's popular tourist island of Flores at around 5.30am on Saturday, August 15, 2026, sending terrified residents fleeing into chaotic streets and hospital corridors.
Based on reports from the region, the shallow tremor severely impacted towns across the area, with Nagekeo identified as the hardest hit location roughly 200 kilometers east of Ruteng.
Emergency officials confirmed that nearly 160 houses, dozens of educational and health facilities, and other public structures sustained significant damage during the sudden disaster.
Citing reports from local authorities, approximately 2,000 inhabitants evacuated their homes as an initial tsunami warning was issued before being safely lifted later in the day.
Hospital Patients and Families Face Chaos During Morning Tremor
According to accounts from witnesses at the Ruteng hospital, patients and family members experienced extreme panic as the violent shaking caused furniture to scatter and hospital walls to crack.
Melania Nius, a 56-year-old resident who was tending to her husband on the third floor of the hospital, described how the bed nearly flipped over while debris partially blocked their evacuation path.
"I just prayed: "God, if you still give us the chance to live, please open a way for us'," Melania stated, expressing immense gratitude after managing to push her husband"s bed outside to safety.
Tonsianus Sambang, a 31-year-old barber visiting his mother at the facility, noted that people began jumping out of windows and rushing outside as falling objects filled the room with dust and debris.
Emergency Aid and Relief Efforts Underway for Displaced Residents
In the aftermath of the disaster, dozens of patients were moved to temporary tents erected outside medical facilities while numerous residents spent the night outdoors due to dozens of dangerous aftershocks.
Yoktafiana Sinar, a 40-year-old restaurant worker, recounted how she shielded her grandchild under her stomach before her home collapsed on top of her, leaving her with a broken leg.
According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, formal preparations were quickly mobilized to deliver essential aid to the thousands of people currently staying in temporary shelters.
Further reinforcing relief efforts, the Indonesian government deployed 50,000 aid packages totaling 275 tonnes, while European Union leadership offered advanced assistance via Copernicus Earth observation satellites.
