Explore the background of Sky Xu, the ultra-private billionaire founder and CEO of Singapore-headquartered fast fashion giant Shein.

Inside the Quiet Rise of Shein Billionaire Founder Sky Xu

Sky Xu, the 42-year-old co-founder and chief executive officer of global fast fashion giant Shein, has earned a reputation as the world's most anonymous CEO while steering his company toward a high-profile initial public offering in Hong Kong.

Born in Shandong in 1984 to factory worker parents, Xu graduated from the Qingdao University of Technology with a bachelor degree in international trade before building early career expertise in search engine optimization and online marketing.

According to reports from media outlets, the elusive entrepreneur launched his initial e-commerce venture in Nanjing back in 2008 before eventually establishing the wedding dress platform SheInside in 2012 with his co-founders.

By 2015, Xu and his partners Molly Miao, Maggie Gu, and Tony Ren successfully rebranded the enterprise into Shein, ultimately transforming the online fashion platform into a multi-billion-dollar global retail phenomenon.

Navigating Public Scrutiny Amid Financial Realities and IPO Plans

Despite commanding immense corporate success that Forbes estimates at a fortune of $6 billion, Xu has maintained an exceptionally low profile, famously avoiding personal publicity and even remaining unrecognized by his own office employees.

Citing reports from financial publications, the company relocated its primary corporate headquarters to Singapore in 2022 while keeping the vast majority of its core manufacturing suppliers and extensive warehouses situated within China.

Based on recent regulatory filings and financial data, Shein reported a net revenue of $41.85 billion for the entire year of 2025 alongside plans to raise between $2 billion and $3 billion through its upcoming public market debut.

Addressing supporters at a government event in February, Xu expressed strong optimism for the future by stating, "We are sure that, on the wave of Guangdong’s high-quality development, Shein can together with this dynamic land make "made in Guangdong" the global standard for the fashion industry."
