Vietnamese copywriter Ho Gia Hoang secured a top global creative award by integrating traditional folk art into his U.S. master's graduation project.

Vietnamese Copywriter Secures Global Honor

Ho Gia Hoang, a 33-year-old advertising graduate and Fulbright scholar, won the prestigious D&AD New Blood Awards 2025 after blending traditional Vietnamese folk art with contemporary branding during his studies at Virginia Commonwealth University's VCU Brandcenter.

Citing reports from academic and creative profiles, Hoang previously graduated with honors from the Foreign Trade University in Ho Chi Minh City and RMIT University in 2015 before working at top global agencies like Ogilvy, Dentsu, and Publicis.

Based on reports detailing his career path, he paused his professional work in Vietnam in 2023 after receiving a Fulbright scholarship from the U.S. government to pursue a Master's program in Branding and Copywriting.

According to project disclosures, his award-winning portfolio stood out among more than 800 international entries by capturing top honors in the Advertising, Marketing and PR category at the global creative competition.

Overcoming Language Hurdles Through Cultural Identity

As the sole Asian student in his class of 21, Hoang initially faced hurdles navigating American advertising nuances, noting that he spent hours studying everyday speech patterns and humor to refine his natural English copywriting skills.

Based on reports from his personal accounts, he rewrote headlines repeatedly to avoid sounding like translated English and deliberately chose to highlight his Vietnamese identity rather than attempting to mask his cultural roots.

His graduation portfolio drew primary inspiration from "Vinh Hoa", a classic Dong Ho woodcut painting from northern Vietnam depicting a baby holding a rooster, which he paired with the iconic rooster-branded chili sauce found in American pho restaurants.

As Hoang explained regarding the design approach, "I wanted people to recognize the Vietnamese influence while still making it familiar enough that Americans wouldn"t feel disconnected, like introducing a new dish rich in flavor.'

Returning Home After U.S. Industry Success

Following intensive portfolio preparation that included localized campaigns such as a Boston-accented advertisement for Samuel Adams beer, Hoang secured interviews with major names like Amazon and Wieden+Kennedy.

Citing reports on his employment milestones, he accepted a job offer from Tombras, named Agency of the Year 2025 by Ad Age, and relocated to Knoxville, Tennessee, after earning his master's degree in May 2025.

Despite successfully establishing a promising professional footprint in the United States advertising sector, records show he plans to return to Vietnam to conclude his three-year stint abroad.

As Hoang stated about his future professional trajectory, "I want to return and create campaigns that have a positive impact on the community and bring Vietnamese culture and everyday life into my ideas."
