Spanish poet Jose Maria Mico wins prestigious international award
Spanish poet, academic, and musician Jose Maria Mico has officially won the 2026 International Alfonso Reyes Prize, as announced by the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature, the Autonomous University of New Nuevo Leon, and the International Alfonsina Society.
According to reports, the distinguished judging panel consisting of Sara Poot Herrera, Adolfo Castanon, and Jose Maria Espinasa selected Mico because his professional profile perfectly reflects the ecumenical character of the esteemed award.
The committee noted that his work successfully balances rigorous research, critical essay writing, translation, and creative expression in direct harmony with the legacy of Mexican writer Alfonso Reyes.
"Poet of subtle will and in search of a synthesis between popular and cultured poetry, the lyrical work of Jose Maria Mico shows a broad knowledge of forms," the official judging panel stated in their detailed evaluation.
Honoring a prolific career in classical literature and translation
Born in Barcelona in 1961, Mico has built an impressive academic career primarily at Pompeu Fabra University, where he serves as a professor of Spanish literature and co-directs the master program in creative writing.
Citing reports from cultural authorities, his extensive scholarly achievements include acclaimed editions of Spanish classics, critical anthologies, and notable translations of major European literary figures such as Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarca, and Ludovico Ariosto.
Expressing deep gratitude upon receiving the honor, Mico explained that the name of Alfonso Reyes has accompanied his intellectual journey since he first began studying the poetry of Luis de Gongora back in 1980.
"Winning a prize instituted in his memory and whose list of winners begins with Jorge Luis Borges and passes through Octavio Paz is an emotion difficult to explain," Mico stated regarding the significant recognition.

Throughout his decades-long career, Mico has received numerous high-profile honors, including the Hiperion and Generation of 27 literature prizes, Spain"s National Translation Award, and Italy"s Diego Valeri Prize.
Based on biographical records, his research excellence has also earned him distinctions such as the ICREA Academia recognition, the Egyptian Museum of Leon Humanism Prize, and the Mediterranean Culture Prize.
The expert jury highlighted his extraordinary version of Dante's Divine Comedy as a major achievement that closely mirrors the visionary approach to literary translation once championed by Alfonso Reyes himself.
Cultural institutions will formally celebrate Mico's contributions as part of an ongoing commitment to acknowledging world-class scholarship, bridging classical European traditions with contemporary Spanish-language literature.
