Breaking Barriers on the Global Soccer Stage
Tori Penso made history weeks before her 40th birthday by becoming the first American woman and second woman ever to referee a men's World Cup match in June, leading an all-female officiating crew across two group-stage fixtures.
According to reports, this monumental achievement follows her groundbreaking stint taking charge of the 2023 Women"s World Cup final and breaking records as Major League Soccer"s first full-time female referee.
Despite these incredible milestones, only six out of 170 officials selected for the tournament were women, demonstrating how rare such elite breakthroughs remain in professional soccer governance.
"This moment is for them so that they have a bigger stage when they get there," Penso said regarding her mission to open doors for women in sports and boardrooms worldwide.
Handling Intense Pressure and Online Misogyny
Occupying one of soccer's most unforgiving roles, Penso managed high-tension games between South Africa and the Czech Republic, as well as Ecuador and Germany, while issuing seven yellow cards.
Citing reports from viral social media moments, an Instagram reel of Penso calmly commanding a Czech player racked up over 26 million views, showcasing her elite composure under heavy scrutiny.
While facing online misogyny and harsh critiques from keyboard warriors, Penso remains unfazed, noting that true criticism only comes from mentors, coaches, and seasoned peers.
"You cannot walk away from a match official and think that that is going to be tolerated," Penso stated, emphasizing the strict authority and respect required to maintain control on the pitch.
Inspiring Future Generations of Female Athletes
Beyond the whistle and the immense personal sacrifices, Penso draws her core motivation from her three daughters, who have their names inscribed directly on her match cleats.
Based on research showing that one in two girls quits sports due to body-type criticism, Penso hopes her strong global presence actively challenges those harmful societal perceptions.
The impact of her trailblazing career is already evident at home, where one of her daughters recently stepped up to deliver opening remarks at a band concert with total confidence.
"I look forward to the day when it is not a talking point, we have officials on the field because they are capable, because they have earned the spot," Penso concluded.
