Saudi Arabia Draggled Into Regional War
According to recent reports, Saudi Arabia spent five months trying to avoid a regional conflict, but early Tuesday local time, restraint ended as its fighter jets and US planes carried out precise strikes across eastern Iraq following relentless drone and missile attacks.
The kingdom now finds itself hemmed in with active threats coming from three distinct directions, including Iran as well as its entrenched proxies in Iraq and Yemen.
Over the last week, the nation faced missile strikes from the Iranian-backed Houthis and drone assaults from pro-Iranian militias, undermining years of diplomatic efforts.
"All the red lines have been crossed, all the Saudi buttons have been pushed," analyst Mohammed al Basha stated regarding the rapid escalation of hostilities.
The Houthi Threat and Oil Infrastructure
Citing reports from regional sources, the Houthis recently launched missiles at two Saudi oil complexes along the Red Sea coast, causing extensive damage to a crucial facility near Jazan.
The recent escalation follows Houthi announcements of a blockade on Saudi shipping transiting through the Bab al-Mandeb chokepoint, forcing a critical re-routing of oil exports.
Saudi Arabia spent seven years trying to dislodge the Houthis from northern Yemen after launching a major offensive in 2015, but a lasting peace was never established.
"The Houthis appear to be following a North Korean playbook, using recurring cycles of provocation to extract political and economic concessions," according to analyst Mohammed al Basha.
Militia Attacks in Iraq Prompt Retaliation
Based on reports from the Saudi defense ministry, pro-Iranian militias among the palm groves of southern Iraq launched dual barrages of drones targeting critical infrastructure and Riyadh.
The sustained attacks exhausted Riyadh's patience, prompting the military to execute precise strikes against eastern Iraq targets linked directly to petroleum facility aggression.
US Central Command described the joint operation as a strong response to over thirty drone attacks directed by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
